Saklas’ “The Ones Who Swallowed God,” proporciona este variedad.

Extreme music is a difficult thing to do correctly. You need the technical ability to play your instruments, definitely, but you also need a talent for composition. Of course, this is true for any genre, but especially for metal. Too many bands that play extreme metal are “one-note bands,” in my opinion, just blasting from start to finish. I love this kind of music, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes I want something a little different. I want a little more variety in my music.

Saklas’ “The Ones Who Swallowed God,” provides this variety. The EP strikes a balance between dissonance and melody, between brutality and atmosphere. It’s never boring. It’s very short, yes, it doesn’t have a lot of time to wear out its welcome, but Saklas are such talented composers that a full length would be just as entertaining.

Having said that, the album starts out heavy, with a flurry of dissonant guitars and drums. Everything mixes together in a storm of wild music. It’s chaos, but controlled chaos. The riffs and drums are precise, and the vocals sound leonine. But the song changes quickly, to a slower passage, a more groovy passage, full of keyboard flourishes. For a dissonant black metal album, it’s almost…pretty at times.

The keyboards on “The Ones Who Swallowed God,” are my favorite moments. The second song is just an interlude, played entirely on the piano, but in my opinion, it’s one of the best parts of the album.

The album maintains the balance between ferocity and beauty for its entire runtime. I really appreciate an album that can do this, that can capture my attention like that. But I don’t want to give you the wrong idea. This album is brutal, and if you like your metal dark and dissonant, you’re going to enjoy it a lot. But it’s also an album to buy if you’re tired of albums with nothing but blasting. It’s a gift for people who want a little more diversity in their music. There’s an eerie beauty to this album, a beauty that will surely generate many listens for me.

Personal Records released The Ones Who Swallowed God by Saklas on 1st April. You can stream and buy it here.
